On 22 November 2006, Virgin Unite teamed with Natalie Imbruglia and Joan Branson, wife of British entrepreneur Richard Branson, to co-host a fistula fundraising event in London, England. The result far exceeded expectations: More than US $1 million was raised through ticket sales, an auction and generous donations. Proceeds will benefit a joint UNFPA-Virgin Unite fistula prevention and treatment project in northern Nigeria.
“I swore when I last visited Nigeria that I wouldn’t go back without having raised some funds to make a real difference,” said Natalie, who spoke passionately about the issue throughout the evening. The project will launch in early 2007 and Natalie plans to return to Nigeria in December to see how it is progressing.
While in London Natalie appeared on several news programmes—including ITV Lunchtime News, CNN Today, Sky News Tonight and Al Jazeera English—to raise awareness of fistula. Click here to view these news clips.
