22-year-old Esmithi struggled for three days at home without a doctor trying to give birth to her son. The baby survived, but the strain of labour left her leaking urine. When Esmithi and her husband learned treatment was available at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, they traveled by bus and rickshaw in search of help. This photo was taken on the day of her surgery. Dec. 2003. |
